Jumping Joe's 50th Year of Volleyball
1999 Mid-Continent Conference Champions - YSU
Joe Conroy current OVR club coaching director of Thunder VBC is celebrating his 50th year in the sport of volleyball. Joe first got interested in the sport of VB at the age of 13 when his father who also played VB in the USAF would take Joe to YMCA’s in NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania. After graduation in 1974 from Boardman HS he went on to the University of Toledo where he was an all-conference football player while playing for the Rocket’s club VB Team.
In 1978 Joe was invited to try out for the U.S. Olympic Team where he made it to the final cut. After graduating from UT in 1979 Joe ended up in Southern California where played on the beach volleyball circuit which later would become the AVP, with the likes of Wilt Chamberlain and Karch Kiraly to name a couple.
Joe returned to his roots in Youngstown in 1985 and became the strength and conditioning coach (which he also did for Coach Tressel’s National Championship football teams) along with being the assistant VB Coach for Youngstown State University. In 1992 Joe became the Head VB coach at YSU. Under Joe Conroy YSU became a perennial power in the Mid-Continent Conference. Joe led the YSU teams to 188 wins along with being named conference coach of the year five times.
Upon leaving the YSU VB program Joe continued at YSU as a campus rec coordinator. Coach Conroy is also in his 16th year as Head Coaching Director for Thunder VBC.
So here’s a big CONGRATULATION’S to you “Jumping Joe” (FYI the nic-name came from Joe’s 44” vertical leap) on your 50th year in the sport!!
